Thai wives have become a social phenomenon studied by Western commentators
There is a growing numbers of marriages between western men and Thai women has prompted a lot of research by government agencies and academics. The latest statistics from Thailand's marriage registration offices in Bangkok indicate that marriages between Thai women and foreign men are remarkably successful.
These figures indicate a 15% divorce rate over a ten year period in marriages registered between Thai women and men from foreign countries. The figure is well below the 50% divorce rate in the U.S. and even higher figures or some European nations. The phenomenon of western men marrying Thai wives is growing. Not only is it middle aged men but now younger western men are also lining up to marry Thai women. And it doesn't’t stop there, now Chinese men are coming to Thailand in record numbers particularly those who have been successful in China’s growing economy.
Now social commentators are looking beyond the ‘sex tourism’ tag and beginning to understand that a social phenomenon is occurring here. There are now large number of Thai wives not only in the United States but in Australia and Europe particularly in Scandinavian countries. Many men report that they have turned to Thailand having had negative experiences with western women where a curious mix of feminism, government social policy and popular trends has challenged more traditional males.
It is not uncommon for Thai wives of middle aged western men to handle all the housework but this picture is changing among younger westerners who choose to marry a Thai women. ‘I wanted to marry my Thai wife because she is so beautiful,’ says Helmut from Germany, a 28 year old building contractor who is now building a dream home for his new Thai bride. ‘We will share the housework chores,’ he states.
So why are younger and very eligible Western men marrying Thai wives? ‘Because Thai wives and Thai women have become associated with something more exotic and desirable,’ according to one commentator who recently wrote a PhD thesis on the subject for a Norwegian university?
A new Thai wife in Norway interviewed for the thesis explained why she valued her Viking husband over a Thai man. ‘It’s not just about money, when Arvid came to Thailand at first, he was a millionaire in my eyes. I liked that surely. I soon discovered it wasn’t that way but he is faithful, he is a good man. Thai men are not as faithful,’ she explained.‘The main disadvantage about western men is that they get angry, Thai men do not behave this way.’ ThaiLoveLines.com is Thailand’s biggest internet dating site with over 335,000 members and growing rapidly …Begin your search for a Thai girlfriend, wife or partner here.
